Halloween Pet Safety: A Checklist for Dogs and Cats

For a pet, Halloween can mean an opening front door, unfamiliar visitors and food left in unexpected places. Prepare the household before the first guest arrives. This checklist works for a small party as well as a busy trick-or-treat evening.

Do a short household briefing

Decide who answers the door and who checks on the animals. Tell guests where coats and bags should go, and ask them not to feed the pets. Give children a clear place to store collected sweets. One agreed plan is easier to follow than several people assuming someone else is watching.

Keep sweets and decorations out of reach

The ASPCA warns about chocolate and sweets containing xylitol, stressful costumes, open flames and escape risks at Halloween. Store treats in a closed cupboard, keep wires inaccessible and choose decorations that the animals cannot chew. Avoid costumes that interfere with breathing or movement; skip dressing up a pet that appears uncomfortable.

If you suspect an animal swallowed a harmful item, contact a veterinarian or the appropriate local animal poison service immediately. Keep the packaging and note the time and possible quantity. Do not wait to complete an app entry before calling.

Plan the front door routine

Prepare a comfortable room away from arrivals, with familiar bedding and the animal’s usual essentials. Tell everyone which door must stay closed. Try the arrangement before the party so you can see whether it suits your pet. Do not leave visitors to discover the routine by accident.

Check identification details beforehand. A recent photo and the correct contact details are useful if an escape occurs. Our microchip guide explains why a record in an app and an official microchip registration have different roles.

Make an evening care note

In PokiPaw, keep a brief note of the normal meal time, any prescribed treatment and who is responsible that evening. Record what actually happened rather than ticking off an action in advance. If more than one person is helping, agree who will do each task and confirm completion with them.

Save your local emergency clinic’s phone number and address somewhere everyone can reach. Check its opening hours yourself. For a fuller preparation list, see the pet emergency guide; Halloween planning is one part of that wider plan.

Check the house after guests leave

Inspect the floor and furniture for wrappers, costume pieces and decorations before letting pets explore again. Return to their familiar routine and note any unusual behaviour to discuss with the veterinarian if you are concerned.

Does a pet need a costume? No. A quiet evening without dressing up is a perfectly good plan.

Can PokiPaw provide emergency treatment? No. It helps keep information together; urgent advice comes from a veterinary professional.
