Adopted a Pet with No Medical Records? Start Here
A missing vaccination booklet does not mean an animal has never been vaccinated. It means the history is not yet documented. Start by separating verified facts from information you still need to confirm.
Ask for every available record
Contact the shelter, rescue or previous caregiver for clinic details, adoption papers, vaccination entries and treatment reports. Keep a note of who supplied each item. A photograph or verbal account may be useful context, but tell your veterinarian exactly what evidence you have.
Arrange an individual veterinary review
Discuss the missing history with your veterinarian. AAHA guidance addresses incomplete vaccination histories in dogs and recommends assessing vaccination needs for newly adopted cats. The plan depends on the animal and local requirements; this article does not provide a universal catch-up schedule.
Create a confirmed-and-unknown list
- Confirmed: adoption date and documents you actually received.
- To verify: microchip number, registry details and previous clinic records.
- Unknown: vaccination dates or treatment courses without evidence.
- Estimated: age or birth date if supplied as an estimate.
If an app field requires a date, keep the estimate clearly labelled in your notes. Never create a completed vaccination entry solely to fill a gap.
Start today’s observations in PokiPaw
Record meals, behaviour and events from the day the animal comes home. Keep new observations separate from historical information reported by others. Add documents as they arrive, retaining their dates and issuing clinic. Share the unresolved questions at the first consultation.
Update when information arrives
Compare newly received records with your notes, correct confirmed mistakes and keep useful provenance. Ask the veterinarian to clarify conflicting medical information rather than choosing the most convenient version.
Should I delay care until all papers arrive? No. Tell the clinic what is missing and seek care when needed. A complete folder is not a condition for asking for help.
